The table above illustrates the work participation of the rural population with sex break up at the Subdivision level. The total rural population has been categorized into three categories viz., the Main workers, Marginal workers, and the Non workers. As per the Census concept they are the Main workers who were engaged in any type of economic activity for more than six months or 183 days during the last one year, preceding the date of enumeration. Similarly those who have worked but for the period less than six months or 183 days are termed as Marginal Workers. Accordingly there are 154214 working persons which constitute 41.74% of the total population. Of which 150299(40.68) are Main Workers and the remaining 3915 (1.06) are Marginal Workers. It may be noted that 58.26% of the total population of the state do nothing but depend upon some other persons in feeding themselves. Percentage of Main Working population is the highest in the West District where 44.51% of the total population are Main Workers while in the absolute number East District leads the race with 54060 (49663+16608) persons. The highest percentage of Main Workers is recorded amongst the male is seen in Chungthang Subdivision with 58.73% amongst the female the highest percentage is recorded for Soreng Subdivision with 40.70%.
