Gangtok is the administrative of the State.  According to 1991 census, the urban population of the State is 37006 and Gangtok alone has population of 25024 i.e. 68%.  The rapid and high  degree  of  population shift  from rural to urban areas  has forced the capital town to grow in very rapid manner. Gangtok town has now been proposed to be built into a model city.

The Government has stopped the allotment of sites  in the town. The existing infrastructure and civic amenities like parking areas,  marketing yard, alternative footpaths, recreational  parks etc. are being developed to cope with the rapid urbanisation. This becomes even more important as  Gangtok, the capital of the  state,  is also the centre of administrative,  cultural, social  and  educational activities in the State.

Decadal Growth Rate in population of Gangtok town is as under:
Year Population Decadal Growth
1951 2744
1961 6848 149.56
1971 13308 94.33
1981 36747 176.13
1991 25024 - 31.90

The negative growth attributed to reduction of notified town limits as a policy measure by Sikkim Government.
The population for Gangtok urban extension is 629792 and the average projected population is 1,57,000 in 2010 and 2,12,000 in 2020.
